I am not sure about this workflow either, I am the one responsible for batches
not existing until you add an item I think, so feel a bit responsible :-)

I would suggest 
1 - move the 'Save description' button into the toolbar with the other buttons
2 - disable it until an item is added with a tooltip 'Add an item to create the
batch and save description'
3 - Have the 'Add item' button also trigger an update of the description if it
has been changed

Would that make sense Aleisha?
