Ack, of course.. this is where NULL being meaningful is bad :(.

Hmm, in a few other projects I enforced via relations and made sure I had a
'hidden' default to replace anywhere I'd want a NULL.. but I think that would
be a pretty drastic change..  I'll ponder for a while.
