Upgrading from 21.05 to 21.11 the installer said:

Upgrade to 21.06.00.007 [15:41:52]: Bug 11879 - Add a new field to patron
record: main contact method
ERROR: {UNKNOWN}: DBI Exception: DBD::mysql::db do failed: Row size too large.
The maximum row size for the used table type, not counting BLOBs, is 8126. This
includes storage overhead, check the manual. You have to change some columns to
TEXT or BLOBs at /usr/share/koha/lib/C4/Installer.pm line 738
