This is a great improvement, the biggest bit to me being the 'default' fallback
behaviour.

I can't come up with a nicer way to do the DB update, but I think we can cover
ourselves with release notes.

We can certainly continue to iterate here on follow-up bugs.. I'm still keen to
split the tables back out for different functions.. but that can certainly come
later.
