Nick,
1. You need to either exclude the attribute from the API (preferredname =>
undef in Koha::Patron::to_api_mapping) or add a mapping for it, and add it also
to definitions/patron.json
2. I suggest you name the column preferred_name to avoid the need for any
mapping :-D

Failing because it is breaking the API as-is.
