It's the first module that provided a JSON for DataTables in AJAX (so with
filter, ordering, etc.)
It does a lot of things, and using the REST API (with the DT wrapper) won't be
easy. It's used for the different patron searches

Nick wrote something on bug 29125, to remove the raw SQL.
