Ok I understand what you're saying now... 

It's not that the sort fails completely. Rather, it's doing a lexicographic
sort... so it'll go 1, 10, 2 for ascending 1=12 sort. Yeah that's annoying...

Btw, one way to do tests for this is to use "yaz-client".

Search on something like "e" in koha-testing-docker, and then run "sort 1=4 >i"
