I do really appreciate your work here, hope I didn't come across mean in my
comments.. it turned out a little more verbose than intended as I worked out
how it all fits together again.

Do you happen to still have a branch around for this?  I've got a couple of
follow-up patches to add but I've discovered that when trying to apply the
patches from here I get some weird unexpected conflicts and the result is that
we somehow drop a patch when applying at the moment.

If you still have the branch, I could use that as a base to try and work on the
fixes.
