The correct pattern is in BackgroundJob:

sub decoded_data {
    my ($self) = @_;

    return $self->data ? $self->json->decode( $self->data ) : undef;
}

sub set_encoded_data {
    my ( $self, $data ) = @_;

    return $self->data( $data ? $self->json->encode($data) : undef );
}
