I don't want to derail this bug, but an interesting follow-up would to be use
replace manually implementing the caching for each method with decorators like
https://metacpan.org/pod/Class::Decorator or
https://metacpan.org/pod/Python::Decorator

Then, enabling caching for a given method would be as simple as changing

sub is_expired {

to

@cached
sub is_expired {
