This is definitely not a bug in the sense of something not working the way it's
designed to. Koha doesn't have code that automatically formats entry into
dates, that's why the date picker widget is used.

However, it is certainly becoming increasingly common for date fields to accept
and automatically format text entry, and adding that should be something we
look into.
