I did have some library records with ESC characters in them, but no matter what
I try I cannot reproduce that same record. 

Somehow “ got turned into \x1b(3\x1b)4z\x1b(B

In UTF-8 that would be e2 80 9c and in Windows-1252 it would be 93, so it looks
like some big time weirdness...
