Rebased as requested.. I've made sure the QA scripts are happy and that the
tests are all passing.. but I've not actually confirmed the functionality is as
it was originally intended.  (Honestly, it's long enough ago, I can't totally
remember how it's meant to work :( )

I look forward to feedback though, so please test :)
