When originally implemented, the feature was unable to use the system
clipboard, this was a browser limitation at the time. The internal clipboard
was developed as a workaround, and used the familiar key combinations to
provide the closest experience possible.

We could change the default keys for new installations, however, I agree with
Katrin that making a change to existing setups might be more confusing.
