I can't see another method for doing it. I did notice, hunting around in the code recently, that there may be an assumption that zebra is not kept in sync with the items table w/respect to circulation status ... this is not the case, zebraqueue is called for every circulation event, so it is a reliable (though not authoratative) source for this data.
