It looks like this is what happens: when you check-in a book that has a reserve on it, the status is set to "waiting" (by returns.pl) and a subroutine called "printslip" is called from C4/Print.pm. This subroutine either prints a routing slip on the circulation slip printer, or it prints to the file /tmp/kohares if system preferences are set to no circulation slips.
