When checking in that same item, the spaces lead to an "item not found" message. This inconsistent behavior. Another example - a new library hand-typed their item barcodes into Koha with spaces (0 003 000 1234) and were able to check out the item to a patron using a scanner gun, but then could not check the item in when it was returned.
