I would love to see the database call moved into Koha::Patron as a method (->todays_checkins perhaps) and as such have a unit test associated with it.. but we can handle that in another bug.

That's (almost) exactly what I was coming to write. There is already kind of the same code in members/readingrec.pl (op=export_barcodes).
