It will work, it supports both, the 003 will be used only for further disambiguation in case the records have it. See also bug 27507.

Also to further elaborate, the adding of 003 is to fully support the marc format, see https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd773.html for examples of 773$w.
