We use EU-type format with comma (,) separating euros from cents but still we have to input money with dot (.) for decimal. The discussion on how to implement different input formats is a long one and we haven't come to a final conclusion/solution so far. I recently wrote up bug 35241 after dicussion with some other devs and I believe it is the approach we should take.
