From the discussion above, I would conclude that the author did not yet provide answers to questions raised. The code looks reasonable but does not apply anymore.

From a functional perspective, it is hard to say (at first glance) if [a] this approach with a new pref, [b] the approach of comment19 with bug 12802, [c] yet another solution (perhaps linked to editing guarantor/guarantee record), would be the best way to go. I have my doubts on approach b btw. I would rather leave the guarantor stuff outside firstvalidemail.
