I was going to suggest using XML::LibXSLT::register_function() to solve this problem, which I've done locally for years, but your comment reminded me of EXSLT! That seems like an easier way to do it. A while ago, I actually ended up using EXSLT in DSpace since Apache Xalan supports it and I needed some extension features.
