One way was with bulkmarcimport.pl; if I didn't set an itemtype then there was no itemtype defined for the book, the field was NULL.

The second way was with the Intranet web interface, from the MARC cataloging page. The first few books I added, I didn't even visit the 5th tab, where the itemtype is defined. So it was simply never set.

If itemtype should always be set, should the field be NOT NULL and default to the first itemtype or something? Personally, I don't see why it should be required.
