Ah, right, I'd forgotten about that switch, as it doesn't work with authorities, and I can't do rebuild_zebra.pl -a -b -x -z in my crontab.

So, the ISO2709 character limit is not actually an issue at all, then.

This is incorrect.  As configured by default for use with Koha, Zebra
can ingest either ISO2709 blobs or MARCXML (e.g., by passing the -x
option to rebuild_zebra.pl), so the ISO2709 record size limit is not a
limitation of Zebra.
