Nelsonville Public Library is interested in seeing some functionality added to Koha. While they'll be announcing this themselves fairly soon, I wanted to prime the pump a bit and let people start thinking about how we could go about doing them, and what impact they might have on Koha. 1) full MARC support ... this is already on the table for the 1.4 series. I'm not sure how much we need to talk about it, but I'll toss this ball over to Paul. 2) a Z39.50 server ... we've got a client, and Steve tracked down an Z39.50 server module so the biggest bit of work would be integrating it into Koha and searching our database. 3) NCIP ... this is the hardest of the batch (I think). having NCIP would really put us into a sweet position. Interoperability with other ILSes and with things like Self Service Checkout Terminals become possible. What think ye? -pate

1st, i think that i don't know what NCIP mean ;-) About full MARC support : i'm "ready to play with the ball", but what is the exact question ? what will be the MARC support ? what do we need to reach the MARC version, what could it costs ? let me know, and i'll will answer promptly. -- Paul

NCIP is a interlibrary communications protocol that can be used for interlibrary searches, handlind interlibrary loans, etc. My understanding is that it can also be used to drive 'self serve' check out systems like the one from 3M (I could be wrong here). A good place to go for an overview of NCIP is: http://www.niso.org/committees/at_jan_02/index.htm copies of the standard and an implmentation profile (longish pdf files) can be had from: http://www.niso.org/committees/committee_at.html

I think the big questions are 'What do we need to do to reach the MARC version?', "What is the (general) plan for getting there?" "What would it cost?" is a question best left for the RFP responses. I'm sure that specifics about "How to get there" will be covered differently in different repsonses as well. Second to these (and this goes for all three of the projects) is 'How do we integrate work for hire with the rest of Koha development?'. E.g., my hope would be that you and Steve would be the ones to bid on and win a contract with Nelsonville to do work on the MARC project, but it's possible that "Uncle Bob's Perl Farm" (UBPF) will come up with a compelling bid. You (Paul) will still be managing the 1.4 release series, so we're going to need a way to ensure that UBPF's work meshes with your vision and that 1.4 isn't thrown off track. -pate

I think the answer to "what is the plan for getting there" is at : http://www.saas.nsw.edu.au/wiki/index.php?page=ToDoMARC since a few weeks ;-) Note i think i'll add some ideas in the next days.

Ahh, sorry for not looking at that. Thanks for the pointer.

"Uncle Bob's Perl Farm" is a non-existent (I hope) company that I made up for use as an example. -pate
