Hi everyone, OK ... Let's get this ball rolling. As I mentioned in my last e-mail, the website/interface design focus group will focus on the overall user experience of Koha on the website, documentation, and interfaces. So: colors, logos, layout, standards compliance, usability, beauty, accessability, etc. Let's plan a meeting on #koha to discuss all the issues involved and to map out a plan of attack. How is 7PM GTM Thursday 27th on IRC? Here's the time in your area: http://tinyurl.com/dk29s Let's try to get a clear picture of what we're going to dicuss before the meeting so we can keep it brief -- what should be on the agenda? Let me know if the time isn't good for you and what time would be better. -- Joshua Ferraro VENDOR SERVICES FOR OPEN-SOURCE SOFTWARE President, Technology migration, training, maintenance, support LibLime Koha ILS, Mambo Intranet, DiscrimiNet Filter jmf@liblime.com | Full Demos at http://liblime.com | 1(888)KohaILS

I won't be here, but am interested by the results of the meeting (as it may be useful for koha-fr.org too) -- Paul POULAIN Consultant indépendant en logiciels libres responsable francophone de koha (SIGB libre http://www.koha-fr.org)
Hello All, Just wanted to introduce myself before the meeting. My name is Corey Burger, I am a 22 year UI/usablity person from Victoria, Canada. I stumbled on Koha through Linux Today and took a look at the web interface, and realized it needed a facelift. Then this email came along. Serp. indeed. Cheers, Corey
Hi Corey, Welcome to Koha! We'd love to get you involved in the process -- take a look at Russ's email: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=7351651&forum_id=2545 If you have anything to add, I can put it on the agenda. I'd love to hear any ideas you've got for a 'facelift'. -- Joshua Ferraro VENDOR SERVICES FOR OPEN-SOURCE SOFTWARE President, Technology migration, training, maintenance, support LibLime Koha ILS, Mambo Intranet, DiscrimiNet Filter jmf@liblime.com | Full Demos at http://liblime.com | 1(888)KohaILS
Hi all, Here are some links I came across lately that relate to OPAC layout (and functions): Library Journal: Roy Tenant, "Lipstick on a Pig" http://tinyurl.com/95hds Lorcan Dempsey's weblog (OCLC): Dorothea left a comment which wondered how one would present FRBRized results to the user. We have been working on this internally. This screenshot shows an approach. I would love to be involved with better search. There is an amazing amount of myopia regarding searching large and complex catalogs generally, and more in the library world. Even tech savvy people like the my brother ask "But how do I search the cd catalog?" Enough rants, do we have a spec for BetterSearch, or should I go about dreaming one up? Corey
Enough rants, do we have a spec for BetterSearch, or should I go about dreaming one up? We've been working on it and 2.4 will include BetterSearch ;-). How

I've outlined some methods on the 2.4 scratch pad TODO list: http://wiki.liblime.com/doku.php?id=koha24rmnotes (under "Searching" there are some links to ideas we've had) Chris committed some basic Plucene textual database scripts for Koha into HEAD (CVS for 'development stuff') and I've created a Plucene index and got the searching up and running on NPL's 150,000 biblio database. Unfortunately, based on my initial tests, Plucene doesn't offer much in the way of speed (which is one of the biggest problems at the moment): with NPL's data it often took 14-15 seconds to return a list of items which matched the terms used. I haven't completely given up on Plucene yet as we may not be optimizing the indexes and there may be some ways to get more speed out of it. The second option suggested by Indradg is Namazu which is also a full text indexing/search engine but I haven't had a chance to play with it yet. I still think full text indexes are the way to go as they would allow much more flexibility than SQL affords. So this is an example where we've got some overlap between 'design' and 'new features'. Corey, if you've got some ideas for how searching could be improved, please let us know (you can email the list or just edit the scratch pad I alluded to earlier) -- in the meantime, I'll try to get a sample of Namazu up and running so we can test it out. Does anyone else have searching ideas? -- Joshua Ferraro VENDOR SERVICES FOR OPEN-SOURCE SOFTWARE President, Technology migration, training, maintenance, support LibLime Koha ILS, Mambo Intranet, DiscrimiNet Filter jmf@liblime.com | Full Demos at http://liblime.com | 1(888)KohaILS
OK folks, here's a rough agenda for tomorrow's meeting, if you've got items to add feel free to reply with the additions. I've included some references that have come up in the course of discussions leading up to the meeting as a sort of pre-meeting summary: 1. Koha Website: What _is_ koha.org? How can koha.org be professional enough for libraries interested while still being a useful resource for developers? Koha Interfaces Default Template Design Process (in no particular order) colors, logos, layout, standards compliance, usability, beauty, accessability(screen readers, PDAs, etc.), translations. Interface TODO list 4. Recruit volunteers to do TODOs (this will probably happen along the way) 5. Roles (should we have an Interface Designer and if so, who?) (how will we handle web site design collaboration?) If you're new to Koha you may find these references useful in evaluating our current designs and design ideas.
