RFC : Local cover images
Hi All, I have received sponsorship from "Sikh National Archives" to add the ability in Koha to display book covers scanned and stored locally in the server. "Sikh National Archives" have a lot of old / rare books & manuscripts which do not have ISBN hence this requirement. Here are the customer requirements in brief : 1. Provide facility to upload scanned cover images linked to biblionumber. 2. Create required mysql tables to hold cover images. 3. Provide global system preference to control display of local cover images in OPAC. 4. Create system preference to decide priority of cover images from multiple providers such as Amazon, Google, Local. 5. Customize OPAC to display only first cover image found as per system preference priority. 6. Customize OPAC search and detail pages to display local cover images linked to biblionumber. 7. Provide user rights management to control upload of images. I have added a RFC to wiki here : http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Local_cover_images_RFC I have added this information to Bug 1633 here : http://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=1633 Requesting for comments and suggestions.. Hi Koustubha That's a great feature to add to Koha. Congratulations on this. The only part that I worry about is using the bibliomumber for access: If you were to ever re-install and wanted to export the bib data and re-import then you would be likely to get different biblionumbers for records, so you would lose the link to the images. I would have thought that there should be some unique number or code for each title which you might put into a tag such as the 024 MARC21 tag (Other Standard Identifier): http://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd024.html Maybe have the tag and subfield as a system pref? All the best. Ian On 11/12/2010 10:55, Koustubha Kale wrote:

Valid point about the export and re-import and a good idea of linking with a marc tag. Thank you. Regards, Koustubha Kale Anant Corporation Contact Details : Address : 103, Armaan Residency, R. I agree with Ian that a syspref specifying which field and subfield to use to find local cover images would be best. I think it would also be a good idea to have a syspref for the base URL of the local cover image folder. This way one could keep the cover images on an external server. Where will you store them? On Koha server? on another server? on flickr? somewhere else? Will you upload image file one by one during cataloging? or will you load them in batch? Is there any chance to share them with other libraries?
2. Create required mysql tables to hold cover images.
Isn't it a disputable point? If image files are stored on file system, the Web server (Apache or other) can optimize file delivering, the web browser also. Will it be possible with DB stored files?

+1 It's a very necessary feature. It could be tricky to do since the way to retrieve cover images are so different depending of sources. From my perspective, you will need to redesign Amazon cover image fetching. Now Amazon images are directly linked from an <img> tag target on URL based on biblio record normalized ISBN (ISBN-10)--but which one? You should use Amazon API in javascript to ask for images. This way some current shortcomings could be overcome. For example it would be possible to get images for resources other that books: CD, DVD... Thanks.

Yes for now.
Will you upload image file one by one during cataloging?
Yes it could be done by a form between biblio creation and item creation if the marc field we choose to hold the cover image information is populated ( refer Ian's mail earlier in this thread ). And also may be post cataloging from the details page in staff interface ( To facilitate uploading cover images for biblios already in the cataloge).
or will you load them in batch?
Yes batch upload will be a good feature.
Is there any chance to share them with other libraries?
May be in future versions? As a syspref under control of the library?

We could store on the file system if it is a better option. Regards, Koustubha Kale Anant Corporation Contact Details : Address : 103, Armaan Residency, R. W Sawant Road, Nr.
