This may be the ravings of a sleepless madman, but bear with me for a sec... Someone asked about cross references (ie, look for Cinema -under-> Motion Picture) I (think) we have a feature to store URLs as items in the catalog, right? Couldn't we do a workaround? File cross refs in the catalog as URLs pointing _back to the catalog (ie, the CGI header)_ for the topic they should look under? Nick ...might just be crazy, might just be a genius.

Im leaning towards genius http://intradev.katipo.co.nz/cgi-bin/koha/detail.pl?type=intra&bib=45818 Heres an example of links working now Where it says links to associated websites, that could link to a koha search on a different related subject Chris -- Chris Cormack chris@katipo.co.nz Programmer 025 500 579 Katipo Communications www.katipo.co.nz

Is there a way to automate building these links (e.g., running search terms through a thesaurus)? If so, do we want to write a script to build this on a periodic basis? -pate

I partially agree with Pate : A thesaurus can be useful in 2 ways : * when entering a data : if you enter a data he replaces it with the "standard" term. For example, you enter "wiki", he replaces with "New Zealand". * when searching, if you enter wiki, he shows you "New Zealand". That should be useful, and has to be included in 1.4, i think. But, i imagine the initial question can refer to something more generic, something like "related links" in Mozilla. When you search "wiki", he show you "see also Rugby, countries->big Islands, Maori"... That should be another think. The thesaurus show a standard method for explaining something, the "related links" shows ... "related things" But maybe i'm looking too far ;-) -- Paul

This could work great as a short-term work-around, but I wouldn't consider it to be a *solution*. In application design, you want to have data as self-referential as possible, so that other functions within the system can make use of the cross-reference data. At some point, for example, we will want to export data to a file for a given subject, at which time it is entirely likely that we'd want this cross-reference feature to work for that also. Meaning, exporting all entries for Cinema will export the ones listed uner Motion Picture, etc. Or when we get to enabling Koha as a Z39.50 server. "How do you get from the bedroom to the bathroom? No problem- go out the back door, around the house, in the front door- it's the first door on the left. You can't miss it." :-) - Alan ---- Alan Millar --==> am12@bolis.com <==--
