We're a small library with roughly 20,000 items. Our statewide digital consortium, however, provides access to a further 10,000 items (ebooks and downloadable audiobooks). We'd like to integrate records for these latter items into our catalog to facilitate access, but don't want search results to be overwhelmed with the downloadable, digital content. So ideally we'd like to be able to have searches default to our physical collection, with an option to include digital materials or to search the latter exclusively. Feasible? Hie, A very fast solution will be to use "hidelostitems" system preference (it hides lots items at OPAC) and define you digital items as lost. You may customize OPAC to replace lost information with "this is a digital item". Regards, On Thu, Apr 19, 2012 at 8:11 PM, Cab Vinton <bibliwho@gmail.com> wrote:

The OpacHiddenItems preference would let you hide all items of a specific type, location or collection. So if you put them all in the same location or collection you should be able to hide them all. This is a really better solution, I didn't knew this preference. On Fri, Apr 20, 2012 at 3:00 PM, Nicole Engard <nengard@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks, Nicole. This would work for hiding these items, but I'm not sure how this would help us as we'd like to make the items optionally visible -- EG Null results with a prompt to "Search again for downloadable items?" EG Initial search prompt to "Include downloadable items in this search?" I would have thought that once items are hidden, they can only be unhidden by changing the preference. If this is not currently possible, I would be interested to hear how complicated development would be as I think many libraries would benefit from this feature.
