And it's been free ever since it's been Novell SuSE Linux, ie I think 9.1 The last "non-free" version was the one shipped just after Novell bought SuSE. It was so close to release Novell let it go, and then they stripped out the non-free licences for the next one. And even before that it was "free but not Free", in that the only "objectionable" bit in the licence was the clause that said "no you can't charge, not even expenses".
