You know, the koha folks would also be interested in this. Would you be interested in sharing this with them as well? One of the great strengths of Perl is that it is a far more welcome environment for most library staff. I felt tied to java because of enterprise java beans and cocoon, but it definitely has dampened the enthusiasm of my co- conspirators. Sure, I've copied Pat Eyler on this reply. Attached is a snippet of code to deal with normalizing values. I've tried to follow the NACO rules (http://lcweb.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/naco/normrule.html) as closely as possible. Of course, it's not perfect (mainly the Latin1 fallback).
