Heritage and Hobnobbing at the Athenaeum
We are excited to announce our two guest speakers who will talk about the past and the future.
Pam Baragwanath
Pam is a former teacher-librarian and knows a lot about Mechanics Institute libraries. As Pam says” They were right there from the beginning of settlement with the first institute, The Melbourne Mechanics’ Institute and School of Arts established in 1839 and later renamed The Melbourne Athenaeum”. Come along to hear more about the role Mechanic’s institute libraries played as agents of social change and how the Athenaeum Library became the progenitor of 1,000 such libraries across Victoria.
