in fact, none of the fields in items are updated in circ:

* onloan ( stored as the date due in iso format)
* issues ( a count of how many times it's been issued)
* timestamp (important for doing inventory)

I suspect the following aren't updated either:

* renewals (a count of how many times it's been renewed)
* reserves ( a count of how many times it's been placed on hold)
