Some misunderstanding here.

1. This is on a Debian Linux box, not a Mac box.
2. localhost is not available is a bit misleading. When MySQL sees
   localhost it assumes the Unix domain socket mysqld.sock is being used. 
3. In my case, the socket is not available due to virtualisation.
4. 10.11.12.1 is available as a host, but the installer
   ignores my specification and insists on localhost.

This problem is NOT resolved. The general spec. of the problem:

the installer ignores anything other than 'localhost' during the install
and fails if another host is provided.
