It appears to me now that the problem is capitalization:

"maxItemsInSearchResults" appears in updatedatabase and French sql.  
"maxItemsinSearchResults" appears in Search.pm

Obviously, those are not the same thing.  

For consistency, Search.pm should be patched and the English sql should include
maxItemsInSearchResults.
