Patches have been submitted and accepted to fix the character encoding problem.
 In addition, a patch sent today (2008-02-08) fixes counting the MARC records
correctly if the file happens to contain newlines.

After the "bug 1372: count MARC records correctly" patch becomes available,
please test and advise if this bug may be closed.
