MJR - I eyeballed the attached patch and it looks really good. Is there an open
bug to fix the fixup_cardnumber stuff that you mention? Or, is it possible that
that will be part of this fix?

I think you should run this diff against current head and send it to
patches at koha.org. I'd like to apply it and try it out.
