Set minPasswordLength to 5 or more.  Then click "edit" on a patron record. 
Change whatever you want, leaving the password as "****".  Then get the server
reply that ERROR_short_password:
   The following fields are wrong. Please fix them.
    * Password must be at least 5 characters long.

So effectively, to edit the record, or at least the parts of it in the same
section as password, you have to overwrite the password without knowing what it
used to be.
