I must disagree.  whitespace is not the same as off.  In particular I have a
library with spaces in the barcode.  The whitespace filter would remove those
spaces on scan, and would render them invalid.  This is undesired behavior, we
don't want to re-barcode some hundreds of books when it would be easier to have
an "off" option here.  I suppose that my case is not unique.
