On 7-Oct-2009, Henri-Damien Laurent commited the following alternative patch,
for the 3.0.x branch:

Bug Fix : 3689 
Disabling Query_AutoTruncate for NoZebra searches

This patch seems to have solved this issue, at least for me. Thank you Henri!
