seems that my update missed this - 
ALTER TABLE `categories` ADD COLUMN `enrolmentperioddate` DATE NULL DEFAULT
NULL AFTER `enrolmentperiod`;

after manually doing this - it worked.

will leave open until galen tells me to close it
