If it was simple I would have done it :) The problem is that while you and I
understand why it isn't working - those using it don't understand.  And they
may assume that the defaults are selected and not see that this is not the
case.  So maybe a ajax refresh - or some other note to make it clear that the
messaging defaults don't work when clicking 'add child'
