I'm going to pull this back into 3.8.x now, it is a no risk change, that does
nothing unless you specifically enable it. 

It's bordering on more of a bug fix than an enhancement as it fixes some fairly
serious bugs in searching. So I want to let libraries take advantage of it if
they wish.
