Confirming that Dobrica's patch works for the example given by wajasu. Using
TrueType fonts makes sense to me, the hardcoded path is ugly though.

Since PDF (and the problems it comes with) is what we have now that should have
precedence over what would be nice to have in the future.

What about putting the font path in a syspref instead of hardcoding?
