Some screen readers seem to give the structure of the page. For example, Julius
could make out that when you search for a keyword the results are displayed in
a table format containing 4 columns - check box, item index, item details and
something that he couldn't interpret. 

I tried using alt="" and orca reads it as "opac details link image", which is
what you get even when you don't have alt atribute at all. I support using
alt="Cover Image" as it gives blind users an idea of what is on page rather
than thinking that they are missing out on some information.
