All,

Guys, this was an embarrassing regression - this is functionality that has
never been broken, and now we are "discussing" the solution to fixing it, when
it really just needs to be fixed *right now*.

This is essential functionality for a library, and I don't think we can afford
to be waiting on cleverness, or arguing over the solution for this one. 

Please let's go with the original patch.
