I am not totally sure here, so maybe someone can confirm, but from what I
unnderstand you can build more flexible indexes over multiple subfields with
DOM. So you could index various item subfields into one index and that could
make the limiting more precise - actually looking for your search term in the
same index. I think you could also index depending on indictors or checking for
existence of other subfields first.
