This doesn't work for me either. Here's what I did:

1) Pick an item which isn't checked out, isn't lost, and 
   set its ccode to NULL.
2) Add the item to an existing course, changing the ccode 
   to one of my existing ones.
3) Looking at the entry on the course detail page, the ccode 
   column shows "Unchanged ([my ccode])."
4) Click "remove" to take the item off the course.
5) View the detail page for that item: ccode is not null. 
   It's still the ccode I set it to when I added it to 
   the course.
