If I consider making this change with my library's collection codes the tabs
would become unreasonably long. It's already a little strange, the tabs
wrapping onto multiple lines.

I don't know how common that is among libraries. I'm inclined to say that
anyone who is administering Koha should know what all the collection codes mean
anyway. Perhaps we could add a title attribute to the tabs which shows the
ccode description?
