I tested in a running Koha:
au is making an exact search on the phrase. I did not remember that... Maybe it
depends on syspref

For ex:
I just changed the order of the first name and surname:

-> 1 result (from 200$f field)

-> 0 result

So, to test 700$aDoe$bJohn
au:Doe John should give you 1 result

Is that the case?
